This is a spectacular sci-fi novel. I enjoyed it more than I ever thought I would. Its subjects of love and loss, death and life, and reality and fantasy are well-incorporated into a captivating story line. I was most impressed by the fact that there is a lot going on. Rice has taken what, in someone else's hands, could have been a heap of loose ends, and woven them into a masterpiece. Beware: Reading this book will have you staying up till 2 a.m. when you really ought to be sleeping!!! It's definitely a nail-biter and a keeper, and if you're ready for both a challenge and a pleasure, you most certainly ought to dive into this fantastic book.

When someone you love is stripped from you, you experience the heaviest, loneliest of emotions. You go through feelings that you cannot describe and moments you cannot explain. This book manages to put all those emotions into words. The story is a powerful interpretation of what a person goes through when he loses the one person he loves most. Reading the book got me to places I know I have been before but cannot quite pinpoint when. It was like reading in vivid detail all the things felt, observed, and perhaps, imagined by a broken heart. It took be to places I can never imagine, only feel. I keep wondering how painful it was for the author to birth this book; with all the emotional rollercoaster and the attempts to put in writing unspeakable pain. I was torn. I felt sad for him because he had to go through all those hurt again. But at the same time, I was grateful because the book explained things I felt but cannot quiet comprehend when I lost my love. For you who lost someone dear, this book will provide you hope, thrill, and most importantly, remembrance. The story is but a gift. And I wish that you be able to enjoy this gift as much as I did.

I was drawn into the story on the first page. Rice writes in a profoundly personal way, this sci-fi story is given a freshness and originality that is so often lacking in this genre. If you want a satisfying pager turner, this book fits the bill.
